Build your own

The Future Roots Yurt making course lasts for 4 days and is structured to cover all the different components involved in construction of a Yurt. Our aim is to have students leave us with enough knowledge and self-confidence to be able to achieve their dream of building a Yurt of their own. The course includes instruction and practice with all the tools we use to produce a quality Yurt frame as well how to source and select suitable timber from which to build your Yurt.

The cost of our 4 day course is £400 including all materials.

Time schedule for Yurt making course

Day 1

Morning

The day starts with an introduction to the site, its lay out and a tool identification session. After this we go up to where we cut in the Stanmer High Woods. During the walk there will be a brief tree identification session and an explanation of what we are cutting and how we do an initial grading prior to taking the poles back to the workshop.

Afternoon

The afternoon will be spent stripping the poles and preparing them for steaming. Each student will get an opportunity to try a number of techniques with a variety of tools.

Day 2

Morning

During the morning we will be shaping roof poles to be steamed using draw knifes, steaming the trellis and putting it onto a former.

Afternoon

The second afternoon begins with us steaming the roof poles and wheel wood and bending them onto their respective formers. There will also be more practice with a drawknife throughout the day (time allowing). The first weekend finishes with a quick how to build a Shaving Horse session, an invaluable piece of kit to have around.

Day 3

Morning

First thing on the third day we take everything off the formers and start preparing the crown cut Ash to glue the wheel. Once the wheel is glued we will be drilling and notching the trellis poles and drilling surforming and putting tenons on the roof poles.

Afternoon

After lunch the wheel will be taken off its former and the finishing process begun. This involves planning and marking the wheel prior to drilling.

This comprises of cutting off excess glue, planing and marking the wheel prior to drilling. After this weÕll be putting together the doorframe. The day will end with a run through of potential finishing techniques, which will define how your yurt will ultimately look.

Day 4

Morning

The final day kicks off with drilling and shaping the roof wheel mortises and tying the trellis poles together. The last component of the course is cutting, preparing and fixing bracing to the wheel.

Afternoon

For the final session we shall be erecting a finished yurt and having a wind down chat to answer any questions and explain how to best carry forward what has been learnt to achieve a yurt of your own. Although the course starts at 9am each day finishing times will depend on how long it takes to get through each dayÕs components. Lunch is not supplied, however we do have facilities to bar-b-que if you fancy something hot. Tea, coffee and hot water will be provided.

To ensure a place on the course a £100 deposit will be required at the time of booking.
